In the Air

Image

Morgan Page just released his 100th episode of “In the Air.” Although he has a while to go until he catches Armin Van Buuren (who is currently on Episode #568 of “A State of Trance”), 100 episodes is a serious accomplishment. His sets are always hard hitting with a ton of energy, the perfect prescription to carry you through a long workday. He releases a new episode every week, and if he misses one week, he’ll upload two at the same time! The man is a machine. He is putting on a free show tomorrow night in DTLA. Originally hailing from a log cabin in Vermont, Morgan hosted his first radio program in high school and started producing his own songs around the same time. He attended Emerson college where he worked as a DJ. He has a reputation as one of the hardest working, nicest guys in the industry. Give his stuff a listen.

Goldroom

Image

Goldroom aka Josh Legg is another new producer making waves of California sound. His songs can’t be classified into one genre and as such he doesn’t like to classify himself into one. He recently did an interview with MASSIVE magazine in which he talked about his creative process, touring the world and how he still can’t get enough of Los Angeles. His music has a decidedly California tone and more than enough funk to keep your head boppin’ and your hips moving. A Boston transplant, Goldroom has been living in LA for ten years and recently launched his own label, Binary Records. Binary started as an entertainment company in 2008 helping bring acts like Miami Horror, Holy Ghost!, The Twelves, Bag Raiders, and Anoraak to LA. In 2011, they launched the label and have been blazing trails with new releases since. They recently signed Lancelot and Goldroom decided to put his own twist on Lancelot’s “We Can Dance”. Check it out along with some other Goldroom favs! Follow him @goldroomtunes

Happy listening!

dirtybird

Check these guys out! dirtybird is a record label based in San Frandisco started in 2005 by a man named Barclay Crenshaw aka Claude VonStroke. Claude and his pal’s Worthy and the Martin Brothers (Justin and Christian) were tired of hearing the same old house music. They wanted to create something different with funky bass lines, crazy hooks, and seductive lyrics. Since 2005, dirtybird has released a ton of sick grooves that are guaranteed to make your booty clap.

Jack is Back

Jack White is back at it again, although it seems he is always at it. He recently released his solo debut entitled Blunderbuss and it has turned out to be his most successful album ever, debuting at #1 on Billboard. For those unfamiliar with Jack’s previous work, he has released records with three bands; The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. Each of these projects were unique but they all shared elements of Jack’s sound; one part blues, one part garage, one part country, and a ton of overdrive. Check out the single Love Interruption or better yet get the whole album.

Pitchfork has a fantastic review of the album which can be found here.

Coachella

This year marked my sixth time at the glorious musical mélange known as COACHELLA. Per usual, the festival did not disappoint. I have come to realize that even if there were a less than stellar line-up, this weekend always turns out to be one of the best of the year. This year’s line-up happened to be amazing and I could not contain my excitement. For those who have never been to the festival, there are several different types of accommodations from hotels to camping to vacation rentals. I have done all three and I have to recommend renting a house above all else. It provides certain creature comforts that are unachievable otherwise and can be very economical if you pack in the amigos (without sacrificing comfort). Anyhoos, any festival goer this year was sure to notice the influx of electronic acts on the queue. Unfortunately there is still not enough original content among these artists to avoid duplications. I did not see every electronic act but I still heard various versions of SHM’s “Save the World” five times over the course of the weekend. I think over time, more original content will be created to avoid hearing the same song five times at a festival but it will take some time. However, this could be the impending doom of electronic music, too many DJs doing remixes and not creating enough original content that the new EDM genre will die out like “Electronica” did in the late 90′s and early 00′s. I am anxious to see how it plays out.

I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend regardless as there were several non-electronics acts if you had overloaded and needed a change of soundery. Friday started out with a portion of Yuck’s set. I love their sound which can be described as a fusion of Dinosaur Jr., Built to Spill and Sonic Youth. Check out their song “Yuck.”

My top three acts for the weekend were

#1 Miike Snow

Could have been the fact that I was ten feet back from the stage but these guys blew my mind. Their sound is so original and so fresh, something that doesn’t follow any popular music format. The band was formed in 2007 by producing duo Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg, who have worked with several artists under the moniker Bloodshy and Avant, and Andrew Wyatt. Their new CD Happy for You has some great tracks including my personal fav Paddling Out

#2 Radiohead

They never cease to impress after almost 30 years together (they formed in 1985). If you have not seen one of their performances, it needs to be on your bucket list. Their creativity and musicianship is unparalleled by any other band on the planet. Nothing I can say in this review can recreate the aesthetics of their performance which include close up, chopped shots of the band members and magical colors sprawled across several moving screens that constantly morphs throughout their performance. Their catalog is so deep that they never play the same set twice.

#3 Avicii

I have a lot of respect for this young man. Not only is he one of the leading pioneers of the Progressive house genre at the ripe old age of 22, he has already donated $1,000,000 to the Feeding America charity using the proceeds from his House for Hunger tour. I have seen him once before at the Music Box in LA in July 2011 and he blew my mind so I had high expectations for his set. He did not disappoint. It was unfortunate for him that he was pitted against one of the most anticipated acts of the weekend, Snoop and Dre, but it made for some epic dance space in the Sahara tonight which was ass to ankles all weekend. He was playing a “live” set, which apparently meant he was playing live tracks through Traktor. I’m still not exactly sure how that is considered “live” compared to playing with tables but it sounded amazing none-the-less. He played from the top of a massive face that had some provided some pretty crazy visuals. Image

All in all it was an amazing weekend and extremely hard to narrow down to a top three. If you have not been yet, make sure you do. Until next time..

Disco Days

After procrastinating for far too long, I have finally decided to start a blog as a soap box for mostly things music but a few other topics may sneak in every once in a while. I find I have a greater appreciation for music when I have some context as to who the artist is making the music so I will try to provide some bios in my posts.

As of late I have been listening to a lot of DISCO. Not the Bee-gees or Gloria Gaynor type of disco although this genre does have its roots there. Nu-disco has been rising in popularity in the past 5 years and can best be described as a fusion of house music and classic disco sound bringing together funky bass lines, deep drum beats and happy synth/string sounds. One Nu-Disco artist that has been like a bug in my ear recently is Zimmer. He is currently signed to the Discotexas label and released his first EP entitled Horizontal in Summer 2011 which features four groovy tracks. About a week ago, Zimmer posted 8 remixes of the Horizontal EP which have been on repeat in my headphones ever since. According to the Discotexas website, Zimmer grew up in France but also spent time in California which has an audible impact on his style. His sounds are laid back with a splash of French sex. Anyways check out the remixes below and let me know what you think!
